TQC SHEEN

DEFORMATION RESISTANCE

Physical properties of paint and coatings play an important role in the quality control. Depending on the application a coating is supposed to be extremely hard and rigid such as for example the coating on the hull of an ice-breaker. Automotive coatings however require a certain flexibility since the thin sheet metal of a car body is not fully rigid.

Automatic Cupping Tester

  • TQC Sheen Automatic Cupping Tester to perform a cupping (Erichsen / Dent) test on coated steel panels to define the resistance of paint, varnish or related products to cracking and/or detachment from a metal substrate when subjected to gradual deformation by indentation under standard conditions.

  • Standards: ISO 1520

  • TQC Sheen Automatic cupping tester to perform a cupping (Erichsen / Dent) test on coated steel panels to define the resistance of paint, varnish or related products to cracking and/or detachment from a metal substrate when subjected to gradual deformation by indentation under standard conditions.

  • The test is either used as a “pass / fail” test by testing to a specified depth or defining the minimum depth at which a coating fails by gradually increasing the indentation.

  • Constant deformation
The ISO1520 standard requires panels to be slowly deformed at a steady rate between 0,1 mm/s and 0,3 mm/s without interruption. Especially with thicker steel panels hand-operated testers not always allow an uninterrupted deformation. The Automatic cupping tester is driven by a micro-step controlled electro motor which allows precise and steady deformation with 0,01 mm steps. Uniquely this deformation can be paused / resumed.

  • Unique Interface
Each Automatic cupping tester is equipped with the Triple I ® Navigation Tool. This Intelligent Illumination Interface guides the operator through the TQC Sheen lab-machines. At each step of the operating menu the interface detects which buttons are active and indicates these by means of an illuminated red center This results in a very intuitive operating system which is enhanced with information on the machine’s full colour display.

  • Numerous set-ups
The Automatic cupping tester has numerous set-ups. The custom set-up optionally is password-protected, and after each set number of test runs statistics are shown. Also the illumination of the test specimen can be set-up. To guarantee maximum visibility of all possible types of surface including high gloss, matte or colored samples the TQC Sheen Automatic cupping tester is equipped with a complementary light system of which the colors can be changed to achieve maximum contrast. The strength of the LED’s is adjustable as is the direction of the light source.
The TQC Sheen Automatic cupping tester has a TQC Sheen-Bus connection (LinQ system not included).

  • Qualicoat

Manual Cupping Test

  • Standards: ISO 1520

  • Revolutionary apparatus for testing the resistivity of coatings at various stages of deformation in accordance with ISO 1520 and DIN-EN 13523-6. The built in gear-box minimizes the manual force which is required to deform the test panel, allowing to perform a smooth deformation. The degree or deformation is digitally displayed at a resolution of 0.01 mm.

  • Mandatory test in Qualicoat, QIB and GSB accredited laboratories.

Cylindrical Bend Test Incl Mandrel Set

  • Standards: ISO 1519, ГОСТ 6806

  • The TQC Cylindrical Bend Test is used to determine the elasticity adhesion and elongation of paint on sheet metal in accordance with ISO 1519. A test panel (max. size 150 x 100 mm) is bent over a cylindrical mandrel. The smaller the diameter of the mandrel, the larger the tension on the coating. The test panel is then checked for cracks or damage in the coating.

  • The cylindrical Bend Test is available as a metric and an imperial model. The luxurious desktop holder can also be wall mounted.

  • Mandatory test in Qualicoat, QIB and GSB accredited laboratories.

Bend Test Conical Mandrel Pro

tqc62.png
  • Standards: ASTM D522, ISO 6860

  • The TQC Bend Test Conical Mandrel “Pro” is a laboratory apparatus to bend coated test panels over a conical shaped mandrel in order to assess the elasticity or resistance of a coating-, paint or varnish to cracking, elongation and/or detachment from a metal test panel in accordance with ISO 6860 and ASTM D522.

  • The conical shape of the bending area allows the deformation of the test panel and examination of the elasticity range of a coating over any diameter between 3.1 and 38 mm in one single test. The sample panel is secured to the apparatus by means of a quick lever handle that lock and unlocks the panel in a split second using just hand.

Bend Test Conical Mandrel Basic

  • Standards: ASTM D522, ISO 6860

  • The TQC Conical Bend Test “Basic” is a simplified version of the TQC Conical Bend Test “Pro” (SP1830) It is a laboratory apparatus to bend coated test panels over a conical shaped mandrel in order to assess the elasticity or resistance of a coating-, paint or varnish to cracking, elongation and/or detachment from a metal test panel in accordance with ISO 6860 and ASTM D522.

  • The conical shape of the bending area allows the deformation of the test panel and examination of the elasticity range of a coating over any diameter between 3.1 and 38 mm in one single test. The sample panel is secured by means of two clamping knobs which has to be tightened and loosened by turning respectively clockwise or anti-clockwise.

Taber Stiffness Tester

tqc64.png
  • The TABER® Stiffness Tester is used to assess material stiffness and material resiliency.

  • The TABER® Stiffness Tester provides accurate test measurements to ±1.0% for specimens with a thickness of 0.004″ to 0.219″. With the TABER® Stiffness Tester materials such as paper products, cardboard, plastics, textiles, metals, felts, tubing, wire, rubber and other sheet materials can be evaluated.

  • Incorporated in the TABER V-5 Stiffness Tester is a bi-directional pendulum weighing system. Providing an accurate and responsive method for measuring small load increments, this system is a critical component for determining material stiffness or resiliency. Nine (9) distinct ranges permit testing of materials that are extremely lightweight and flexible (such as cellophane or thin metallic foils) to items that are very rigid (such as plastics).

  • For test ranges 2 – 9, specimens are mounted on the Taber V-5 Stiffness Tester using a clamping system. Located on the pendulum, the lower faces of the specimen clamp jaws are exactly on the center of rotation. This ensures a constant test length and deflection angle for accurate and repeatable results. Both jaws of the specimen clamp are adjustable, so the test specimen can be positioned precisely in the center regardless of material thickness. Force is applied to the lower end of the specimen by a pair of rollers. The rollers, which are attached to a driving disc located directly behind the pendulum, push against the test specimen and deflect it from its vertical position. The pendulum applies increasing torque to the specimen as it deflects further from its original position.

  • Note: The right hand roller includes a ratchet stop mechanism that greatly reduces the potential for inter-operator error caused by over or under-tightening. The travel on the right hand assembly automatically stops when the roller contacts the specimen.
To allow the testing of materials with different stiffness properties, range weights can be applied to the Pendulum. For extremely light weight materials, a compensator range weight is mounted to the top of the pendulum. , range weights. Range weights of 500, 1000 and 2000 “Taber Units” are mounted to the bottom of the pendulum and required for stiffer materials. An optional range weight set of 3000 and 5000 Taber units is required for test ranges 7, 8 and 9.

  • The test point reading occurs when the pendulum mark aligns with the appropriate driving disc mark (7 1/2° or 15°), which points to the stiffness reading on the dial point. The final reading will depend on the range in which the test is being conducted (which dictates instrument set-up and the appropriate scaling factor to use). The instrument outputs the moment load applied to the test specimen in TABER Stiffness Units (g · cm).

  • Range 1 is used to test extremely lightweight and flexible materials whose Taber Stiffness Unit value is between 0 – 1. An optional Sensitivity Range Attachment (also referred to as SR or High Sensitivity Attachment) is used. A specimen 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″is mounted between a set of pin holders, which replace the rollers. The specimen is only deflected to the right.
